day 2: rugby 7s

Game overview. We watched 12 games. (For those who don't know: two halves per game, each half is seven minutes and then however long it takes to finish the play in progress. 7 players. 7 minutes.) We got to see: The Republic of South Africa, Uganda, Samoa, Tonga, England, Sri Lanka, Cook Islands, Canada, Niue Island, Wales, Namibia, Fiji, Scotland, New Zealand, Kenya, and... Australia! Fiji is the favorite for the gold... so it was cool to see them. (The played Scotland and I thought of you Sonja!) And we got to see Australia play twice! Being in a stadium with a 74,000 person capacity watching an international sporting event where the country you are in is playing is... incredible. The energy was through the roof. If people seemed tired or apathetic at all during the 11th match they certainly had no trouble supporting their country's athletes for the final match: England vs. Australia. The game ended with a goal kick for Australia (wish I knew what those were really called- sorry guys) which, had they gotten it, would have tied the two teams and pushed the game into over-time. A tense moment indeed. Game ended England-14, Australia-12. The whole event was certainly an experience to be had. And a good night out!
